Millions of women across the world use the birth control pill as their method of choice for preventing unwanted pregnancy. Whether a woman is in a relationship or not, she may never want to have children, or she may want to be the one to decide when the time is right to have or not have a child.
Birth control is a great thing, even though some of the birth control methods available to women have caused some scary and highly questionable side effects. In fact, breast tenderness, the one we will talk about today, is probably the least of your worries when it comes to potential pill side effects.
Birth control shots like Depo Provera have been called in to question over safety for many reasons. Actually, I have a very good friend who had a stroke at a young age and was told to come off of the birth control shot immediately. She actually was advised to not go on any method of birth control after her stroke, apparently because she was already at a higher risk for stroke.
There is also a patch that can be worn which transdermally deposits pregnancy preventing hormones into the skin which is then absorbed into the blood stream where it goes to work and prevents unwanted pregnancy.
All of these methods have one thing in common. These methods of birth control can cause your breasts to be very tender at times.
It can be before your period, at random times during the pill’s cycle, depending on the level of hormones it is giving, or it can be constant for some women, although this is rare and if it happens, it usually subsides as a womans body gets used to the constant dose of hormones.
It is precisely this reason that I have chosen to do a very low dose pill for myself personally. I have minimized these types of side effects, and the only time my breasts are really tender is right before my period, which is when they would have been tender anyway had I never been on the pill.
Usually the breast tenderness is due to a swelling of the breast tissue. You will often notice that your breasts appear a lot bigger when they are sore and they hurt – this is just an unfortunate “side effect” of swollen breasts.
You may enjoy the way they look, but half the time they are so tender when they are that swollen, that you don’t want anyone to touch them. And what’s really funny is that your husband or significant other will want to touch them constantly when they look like that – one of the times you really don’t want them to!
