MRI’s for Breast Cancer?

It sounds like a pricey alernative, and in fact it is one that insurance companies may balk at because they’ll most likely bear the brunt of the costs, but MRI’s or magnetic resonance imaging, which is not a cheap medical process, are being recommended by the cancer society docs for women who are at high risk for breast cancer or breast cancer recurrence.

The reason for the extra precaution is that traditional mammograms may miss breast cancer formation in these patients, and with the MRI, a much more precise verification can be performed since it scopes out a deeper tissue and is much more accurate than a mammogram in some instances to detect cancer and cancer recurrence much earlier in order to save lives and prevent the cancer from spreading.

I’ve known a few people who’ve had MRI’s for various health problems, and from what I understand, they are a lengthy process sometimes, depending on the level of the scan, but some people may be at the doctor’s office for hours getting the MRI done, while I believe others may be a short time period. From what I understand the hardest part is to sit still for a period of time, but it is a painless procedure!
