The devastated Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan that was ravaged by the huge earthquake Japan experienced mere weeks ago, has many Japanese men and women scared for the health of themselves and their families. It is truly a frightening thing they are going through over there now.
Imagine if suddenly your life was thrown into chaos, where you were not even sure that the food or water you were purchasing at your grocery store was safe any more because levels of radiation had been discovered in some? Or that you may have lost a loved one to the devastation of the earthquake itself and the consequences on physical bodily harm that can occur?
Right now, my heart goes out to those in Japan. Recently, women near Fukushima, one of the power plants that was devastated by the earthquake, and has since gone into a nuclear meltdown status, have tested positive for radiation in their breast milk.
Cesium which is a radioactive chemical, was detected. The “safety levels” of this radioactive substance in breast milk have not been established yet by the Japanese government. Honestly though, is ANY level or radiation SAFE in your child’s breast milk?
Probably not. And the government in all countries pretty much knows that they have to stave off any sort of national panic, so they will say something is safe without actually knowing from years of study and experimenting, that it really is.
This probably has many Japanese women fearing for the safety of giving their breast milk to their children, and I would imagine, would have them fleeing to the nearest store for formula instead of giving their child potentially dangerous, radioactive breast milk.
This whole earthquake and radioactive meltdown really had a lot of us here in the US wondering, what would happen if that were to take place over here? Are we adequately prepared? Probably not. That’s the sad part. I know that there is a power plant about an hour and a half north of me that has been re-upped again, that was supposed to be decommissioned years ago.
It makes me wonder if that power plant is really still ok to be running, and if it is still secure and solidly built, or whether they sort of “wear out”. At any rate, I’m certainly going to prepare for the worst if I hear of anything happening that questions the safety of this power plant.
