Consumer Protection Groups : Silicone Implants Still Not Safe

In a recent story on the FDA conditional approval of silicone breast implants, which were removed from general population access for implantation devices used in breast augmentation procedures, has been called into serious question by many groups concerned for the health of women who will be receiving the controversial implants.

One such particularly outspoken consumer rights and health group, the Public Citizen’s Health Research Group staunchly opposes the trial return of the silicone implants, which are supposed to be more natural feeling and looking than the current standard implant which is made out of saline – a harmless water solution.

The difference is, opposition says, the silicone in fact is not harmless when it enters the body, and has caused autoimmune and other physical illnesses in many women who have experienced silicone leaking into their blood stream.

While there has never been 100% conclusive evidence that silicone causes any such illnesses as claimed, the implants were taken off the market after numerous complaints from women who had this type of implant.

Groups like the Public Citizen’s Health Research Group think that silicone implants were returned to availability without adequate testing and proof that they are in fact harmless, and also believes that the FDA approved their return too hastily, and with some questionable conflicts of interest with manufacturers of the implants, such as Dow and Inamed.

I don’t know, I’d say that the mere fact that there were thousands of lawsuits against Dow Corning, which was the primary manufacturer of silicone implants, forced them into bankruptcy in 1995 would be enough for me to stay away from silicone – forever!
