Breast Reconstruction Patients Happier with Silicone vs. Saline Implants

Well, it’s no secret that silicone breast implants usually give a superior surgical outcome to their close cousin, the saline breast implant. Silicone gel implants simply provide a more natural feel to them, although the look of silicone breast implants are often very close to the appearance of saline – usually.

Female patients who had undergone breast reconstructive surgery after having breast tissue removed, usually for breast cancer, reported more satisfaction with silicone breast implants than with saline, both cosmetically and feel wise.  However, it’s important to note that none of the women who had saline were actually unhappy with their surgery, they just reported higher satisfaction rates with both the aesthetic appearance of their surgery as well as the feel of it.

Silicone implants have long been the subject of FDA and public opinion scrutiny, due to their history as a possible disease-causing cosmetic device. However, there was never actually any 100% conclusive evidences. There was a lot of anecdotal evidence of women reporting issues that had silicone implants, but the science just couldn’t find any links between silicone leaks in the body and autoimmune diseases and cancers.

Women are getting silicone again after they were brought back with new, safer construction, and backed again by the FDA for approval for use in cosmetic surgeries.  Women who are thinner, with very little breast tissue report that they have a better outcome since the silicone is softer and more pliable, whereas thin women often feel like they have obvious implants with saline since they tend to be faker looking when a woman doesn’t have a lot of her own natural fat padding to cover up the hard appearance of the breast implant.

Which type of implant is a very personal choice for women. In the end, it depends on what you are most comfortable with putting in your body. You only get one body in this lifetime, so it’s important to make the right decision.
