Breast Implant Info
Thinking about getting breast implants? Already have them and just want more info on implants? Well, either way, I put together this page for women who want to learn more about breast implants and get some new information under their belt to help them make more informed decisions about how breast implants will affect their body, and if they will make them happy.
The breast implant was invented by two scientists in 1962 who addressed the call for women who were desperate to adhere to the ideal of curvier, bustier women. Up until then, the only recourse a woman had for larger breasts was to place bags full of silicone or other soft liquid into their bras to create the illusion of larger breasts. Once the bras came off, of course this illusion was gone though.
These two scientists, Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow decided to implant these silicone bags directly into the breasts of women, creating a permanent method of breast enlargement through surgical implantation of the new little devices.
Then, the mega pharmaceutical device company Dow began manufacturing the silicone implants by the gross in increasing demand by women for this remarkable new procedure.
By the 1970’s thousands of women had undergone breast implant surgery, but soon women started to complain of health issues that they correlated with the implants, and also of the implants leakind and/or rupturing.
Then, along came the alternative to silicone, the safer, if not less natural feeling and looking, saline implant.
Saline implants were a sturdy “bag” like instrument which was filled with a saline (salt water) solution, rather than the silicone which was thought to cause possible harm. If by chance the saline did leak or the implant ruptured, the saline would be harmlessly absorbed by the patient’s body, rendering it harmless.
The increase in breast implant popularity does not appear to be slowing down. It is still the most popular elective cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States and abroad, showing that women’s breasts are still a coveted object of beauty and sexual status.
The growth of the natural breast enhancement industry is growing as well, showing that women are wanting to augment their breasts, but they really want to maintain a natural look.
There are several methods of breast implantation that may be considered, and their offering may be varied per surgeon’s preference or expertise.
This first and perhaps most common if through the armpit. This leaves a somewhat inconspicuous scar, while also giving ample room and good placement for the breast implant.
The second method of breast implantation is the transumbilical. Transumbilical implantation, or “through the belly button” is the newest and most controversial method, since it barely leaves a scar, but some say that the likelihood of migration is greater.
In other words, due to the odd placement of the implants and the method used, the chance the implants may move and cause a deformed look may be greater. Some discredit this theory, but I honestly think it makes sense.
The third way breast implants may be inserted is under the breast. This is not used very often any more, due to the undesirable scarring it leaves under the breast, which is fairly visible compared to the other methods that can be used.
The fourth, and I think, the best method for breast implant insertion is the “through the nipple” method. While this may not seem appealing, someone digging around in your nipple, it actually produces nice results most of the time, and the scar is barely visible as long as you stay our of the sun and take care of the scar area, it should fade beautifully. Some complaints are that some women may lose feeling in their nipple or lose sexual sensitivity in their nipples after this procedure.
