More Woman Choosing Double Mastectomies
More and more women, and many of them considerably younger women for having breast cancer, are opting to get both of their breasts totally removed after they are diagnosed with breast cancer in hopes of totally eliminating any recurrence of the disease in their other, disease free breast.
Many times, physicians say they feel the second breast removal may not necessarily improve these women’s odds of survival, especially since it is cancer free, however if the patient wants it and would feel better doing it, or has a long history of breast cancer running in the female side of their family, then they will get what they want.
There was actually a study conducted recently by a doctor who noticed that nearly double his patients were opting for the double mastectomies in the last few years, and wanted to see first, why they were increasingly taking this rather radical option over a simple lumpectomy or just the removal of the one cancerous breast, and second, if it really had any bearing on whether the cancer was more or less likely to return.
While the results for the latter could hardly be conclusive with such a short time frame for the research study, he did conclude that more women were opting for the removal of both breasts because they felt that they were doing a sort of “catch all” treatment, and that they were just doing what they felt was probably inevitable - the removal of both of their breasts, up front instead of having to go through the pain and emotional trauma of removing the second breast later on down the line.
I can definitely see the reasons behind getting both breasts removed right up front, and can certainly understand what drives it - the fact that it’s a very scary thing and they would rather just literally cut it all out even if it’s not cancerous yet, and also because there are much better and much less painful and costly reconstructive procedures that can be done to rebuild breasts nowadays.
Interesting Stats on Breast Augmentations
I received the following information from a gentleman who had some interesting statistics on the acceptability of breast augmentation surgery today, and how it is still the most commonly performed elective surgery here in the US.
I thought you might be able to use this: a new survey done by the National Women’s Health Resource Center called Life Makeover Secrets of the Modern Woman provides some interesting insight into how perceptions among women are changing about plastic surgery, specifically breast augmentation.
The survey results show that:
–More than half of women (59 percent) surveyed felt motivated to make over their lives after experiencing a life-changing event, such as major weight change (62 percent), childbirth (59 percent) or divorce/separation/end of a romantic relationship (55 percent)
–The majority of women (95 percent) who wanted to make a change actually did so in at least one area of their lives: health or fitness (57 percent) and physical appearance (42 percent)
–Of those women motivated to improve their appearance, nearly half (45 percent) said they would consider plastic surgery to do so.
–Breasts are among the top five body parts women would change; more than half (53 percent) say they are more accepting of breast augmentation than they used to be.
I can get you more information on these findings, including a comprehensive fact sheet and some background. You can also see the results here:

The site can also help find a certified surgeon to those interested. Thanks so much for your time. Let me know if you have any questions.
Disappointing Taxol News
Taxol, one of the most popular chemotherapy drugs used for breast cancer in women, has been found not to be effective as a cancer fighter and treatment in the most common forms of breast cancer, or at least not nearly as effective as it was once thought against breast cancer.
The numbers of women who are receiving this form of chemotherapy right now here in the US, which accounts for almost half of the total number of patients with breast cancer currently, could potentially be pulled off this chemotherapy drug if supporting evidence continues to the point that it is not found to be useful in treatment at all, and they could escape the terrible side effects of this drug since it may not even be helping them in the first place.
Scary stuff, huh? The catch 22 here is of course this preliminary data, which must be enough to get researchers to do a second round of investigation to see if the first round of results is indeed correct. Plus, there is quite a bit at stake here, since they don’t want to take patients off Taxol before they have 100% conclusive evidence that it is not really doing them any good. They also do not want patients to be on the drug which can cause bad side effects if they aren’t gaining any benefit from it.
Researchers are saying that although this drug has been available well over a decade, this new research was not available to them due to the onset of genetic testing lately and the advances in science that allowed them to do such research to determine whether it was effective.
Researchers are also saying that this and other significant findings in the world of breast cancer research are all pointing to the fact that breast cancer is no longer a disease that can be treated the same in every woman, but rather it will be a unique approach for every patient’s treatment, most likely dependant on the type of cancer and some sort of genetic testing as well. While this may seem like disappointing news, it’s actually a sign that breast cancer research is advancing, and that’s always good news.
Herbal Breast Enhancement Do It Yourself?
This question came from a person who wondered if they could just purchase a bunch of the herbs traditionally used in herbal breast enhancement products as a sort of “do it yourself” herbal breast enhancement deal.
Question :
Harvard Women Wins Breast Feeding Fight
A Harvard student of medicine has won a court battle for additional “break period” time to be able to pump breast milk for her breast feeding infant during a lengthy medical exam she had to take. I’m curious as to why this even had to be a battle in court.. it seems like it would be a pretty clear cut decision to allow her the additional break time, especially if it was secure and there was no way she’d be gaining an advantage competitively in taking the exam.
The most appalling part of this is that the national board of medical examiners is not willing to take the verdict, which has already been taken to a higher court of appeals, laying down. They clearly do not want to afford the defendant the extra hour of break time to do her breast feeding and pumping duties, so they are going to be taking this to the next higher court of appeals again. Wow, I’m wondering how they think this is going to be a competitive advantage for the woman, or what their purpose is in taking this so far?
Sophie Currier, the mother who is fighting for the extra hour of break time must be surprised at what lengths the medical board is going to to prevent her from having the additional time to breast pump, which quite frankly seems pretty reasonable to ask for. Not only is it unreasonable to not allow her this for purposes of caring for her infant and her rights as a woman, but it also can cause Ms. Currier significant discomfort and even inhibit her test taking abilities if she does not pump on schedule, as any woman who has ever pumped breast milk I’m sure can attest.
The medical board’s concerns over the extra hour, they say, are that they have only afforded other breast feeding mothers the standard 45 minutes and nothing more, and they would hate to not be fair and give Ms. Currier more, as it would not be equal to other breast feeding mothers who have taken the exam, who they say have found the standard time allotment for break sufficient and never complained.
Bountiful Breast vs. Phytoestrogen
I received this question from a reader, so here goes. It’s all anonymous as usual, just posting for anyone else who might have the same questions.
Question : Could you please tell me the difference between phytoestrogen pills and non phytoestrogen pills ie bountiful would either have different side effects which type would work better etc. would it be possible tohave a phone conversation about this?
Answer : Sure. The Bountiful Breast is not phytoestrogen (which is plant) based, it is actually bovine (cow) based, but you can go their website for more information on how it works here . It really depends on what works for the person, this can vary greatly, however many women have had great success with a 9-12 month regimen of the Bountiful Breast product when they stick to it and take the product
correctly, so that tends to be more my recommendation if you’ve never tried any of these products before. Hope this helps!
Question : thanks for your reply. could you please explain the difference between the plant based and the cow based ones this is what im trying to find out. how they both work or do they both do the same thing do either of them have different side effects? etc etc. look
forward to hearing from you.

When Herbal Breast Enhancement Doesn’t Work..
I received this question from someone who tried what (I believe) were both herbal breast enhancement products and did not have great success with them, and wanted another natural breast enhancement alternative. Name is withheld, but I wanted to post this in case anyone else has similar questions. I know we’ve had similar ones before, but it’s always good to post people’s questions.
Question :
Breast Cancer Deaths Declining
Good news on the breast cancer front, or at least partially. Apparently deaths from breast cancer are on the decline, but one group of women who is not experiencing this positive downswing in deaths from the female-dominated disease are african american women. The death rates are falling at roughly a rate of two percent per year according to some statistics, and that is better than good - it’s great, considering that this number is huge in terms of preventing deaths, and also if you consider that this number is supposed to be incremental each year.
The speculation for this drop in death rates from breast cancer is that HRT, or Hormone Replacement Therapy was refrained from being recommended to women in premenopausal and menopausal periods as a way to replenish their estrogen supply, which was thought to be a major contributor to the formation and worsening of breast cancer to begin with. This is also being attributed to part of the reason that less deaths are being reported for this tricky cancer.
The news gets even better for women over the age of fifty years old, since their rates fell almost five percent over the past few years, and this makes me think that the HRT theory is all that much more potent in this case, since women in this age group are the ones that were most impacted by this hypothesis since they are the ones most often prescribed with Hormone Replacement Therapies.
One fact that didn’t quite make sense to me though was the fact that fewer women are reported to be getting early mammograms, so this would make one think it would be detrimental to the death rate from breast cancer, since early detection is the best defense against death from breast cancer since it can be nipped in the bud more easily if it’s caught early. At any rate, we won’t argue with statistics this good!
When Skinny Girls Get Pregnancy Boobs
This is just a silly, silly post about something my crazy mind was thinking about today after I saw pictures of the very, very thin Nicole Richie in a two piece bathing suit on the beach, with a protruding belly from her fairly far along pregnancy, and noticed that, oh my God, she’s gotten her breasts back that were taken away when she lost crazy drastic amounts of weight for no apparent reason and seemingly overnight just a few short years back.
There was a time when Nicole looked like a normal, average weight girl. When she first started doing that silly reality show with her then best friend Paris Hilton, Nicole looked good with some meat on her bones, and didn’t seem to care about not fitting some ridiculous Hollywood ideal of size zero or size two. She was kind of a rebel, and that made her likeable even if she was best friends with Paris Hilton and could act like a spoiled b&^& at times in the show as well.
Then, all the sudden for reasons her publicist said were not drug related, she lost tons of weight very quickly, and kept it off and still has until the pregnancy. She had matchsticks for legs, and it looked as if she hadn’t eaten anything real in so long you just wanted to hand the poor girl a cheeseburger if you ever saw her.
Well, at the first rumor of her pregnancy, you could kind of tell it was true. I noticed her breasts started to come back, and that’s almost always a tell tale sign of pregnancy, since we all know that the breasts are one of the first parts of the body to balloon out when pregnant, and any other normal weight gain results in everything BUT breast weight gain, which most women balk about. I’m happy to report, Nicole’s got her nice rack back! Congrats Nicole, and we hope you don’t go back to having no breasts and no waist or womanly shape again. Stay healthy girl! You look a lot more beautiful!
Male Breast Enhancement : Herbal or No?
I got a question from a male trying to increase his breast size and figured I’d post it anonymously with the basic info intact so if other men have similar questions and are on an herbally based natural male breast enhancement product and it’s not working, they can try this other option.
