Herceptin Approval Expanded for Breast Cancer
Remember the new drug that we talked about a few months back that was being tested as another possible treatment for breast cancer after surgery had already been exercised, called Herceptin?
Well, it appears the drug has now won an even more expansive FDA approval after breast cancer research has shown the drug to be safe and effective enough for use on women who have already undergone surgery.
Apparently the drug has been shown to be beneficial for women who have undergone surgery to remove cancerous lumps or to a complete mastectomy. It had shown that the women treated with Herceptin were less likely to have a relapse of cancer for three years after their initial treatment, than the women who were treated with just chemotherapy.
The catch to Herceptin is that it cannot be used on every patient with breast cancer, only breast cancer patients who produce too much of a certain protein are eligible or will respond favorably to the Herceptin treatment. This only accounts for roughly 20% of breast cancer patients, unfortunately, who can benefit from the Herceptin drug.
Another “catch” to Herceptin is that it cannot be used by patients who have a history of heart problems of heart frailties, since it can cause heart failure in those patients, and should be a precaution oncologists are well versed in.
Readers Have Breast Firming, Breast Gain Questions
I received a couple of emails with questions from readers about breast firming without any enlargement naturally, and the popular natural breast enhancement product Breast Gain. Please see below. Names masked for privacy.
“Going to Bat” for Breast Cancer
There’s a new thing going on in the world of professional sports, and no, I’m not talking about any new teams or any major changes, but a positive advance for the cause of breast cancer research and studies, as well as funding for breast health.
It’s called “Going to Bat for Breast Cancer” and it can be seen in the pink bats that some players will be using which say just that on them, in support of breast health and breast cancer prevention.
The bats are sent to players on various teams for use on Mother’s Day, one of the most perfect days to choose for such a promotion, since men in this age bracket typically have moms that are in the higher risk category for breast cancer. The project, put on by MLB is an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.
We hope this does it’s job. Oh yeah, and they’ll wear pink hats too. Now that’ll be a sight to see!
Gummy Bear Breast Implants?
When I first saw this in my obligatory web surfing the other day, I did a double take. I was on a website for a popular cosmetic surgeon’s office, and noticed an ad for what was called “gummy bear breast implants”. So naturally my curiousity got the best of me, and I clicked on the ad.
What the ad linked me to was a website for a new alternative breast implant that is being tested as an alternative to saline and silicone, which is made of a very strong and resillient, yet very pliable material, which they say is comparable to a gummy bear (hence the clever name). On the website’s home page, they actually go over what this implant is, and how they are currently doing participant studies on the implant.
They solicited the help of willing women who would undergo breast augmentation surgery and be sort of a “guinea pig” for this newfound implant that could definitely be the next best thing in the breast implant and breast enhancement world.
They say the gummy bear breast implant is a softer, and more natural option as opposed to the silicone implant.
The study is not going to cover the costs of the operation or the actual implants for the women who choose to participate, but apparently the women will be compensated for keeping several follow up appointments over a ten year span so they can research how the implant is lasting, and how it is performing and looking over time.
I looked at some of the before and afters of actual patients on the website, and I must say, they don’t look too bad. It probably also depends on who is performing the surgery. If you want to see more go to the website : Gummy Bear Breast Implants
Borat Reminds Us of Pamela’s Great Boobs
I saw the hilarious, if not vulgar, over the top mockumentary “Borat” starring the genius comedian Sacha Baron Cohen just a couple of days ago. Pamela Anderson served as Baron Cohen’s unwitting object of affection in the mockumentary, when Borat, Cohen’s alter ego, happens to see Pamela Anderson in her Baywatch bathing suit, saving people and running slow.
He is smitten by her blond hair, and as he says “her plastic boobs”, and starts a hapless pursuit of Pamela (he pronounces “Pemella”) across the US, in search of who he thinks is a real woman. In the movie, we see footage of Pamela’s enhanced breasts, as they used to look, more natural, a decent size, and actually very pretty and feminine. Fast forward to today and Pamela has decided to oversize her boobs, making them into something that looks like it is unmoving and unfeeling.
I can’t believe that women actually like this look, and surgeons say that women still request the “stripper boobs” look. I honestly think she was ten times more beautiful without the implants, or at least with smaller ones. Heck, when you’ve got a natural C cup, why even bother with implants in the first place? Hollywood……
It’s Official : Silicone Implant Ban Lifted
Looks like some women will get exactly what they’ve wanted, silicone breast implants back on the market. Despite protests from several groups of concerned citizens and some existing safety concerns, the FDA has decided to completely lift the ban on silicone breast implants once and for all.
The only approved silicone breast implant though is one made by a company called Inamed which is a part of Allergan corp (same people who make contact solution?).
Some people who protested the pending ban-lift screamed that there was a possible conflict of interest in the lift of the ban that’s been going strong for about 14 years, when women repeatedly had complaints that their silicone implants were causing several health issues, mostly in the autoimmune category.
It used to be that these implants, which are supposed to give a more natural look and feel than the only other option on the market today, saline filled implants, were only allowed for certain reconstructive surgeries involving the breasts and also only for studies being conducted.
Concerns about silicone implants range from silicone migration throughout the body forming lumpy areas, a high rate of rupture, and they were also linked to diseases like lupus and cancer, although no “scientific” studies could prove that this link existed.
The range of limits the FDA put on the Inamed breast implants to be approved for use again is unclear, but manufacturers say the new silicone implant is a superior device that last longer and is much more rupture resistent than the previous silicone implants manufactered by Dow Corning.
Mom Kicked Off Plane for Breastfeeding
I almost couldn’t believe this headline when I read it. I thought it was some sort of sensationalized headline that would really reveal a less shocking story when I actually read it, but it was really about a breastfeeding mother getting thrown off of a flight because she was breast feeding.
Here’s how the story goes, apparently Emily Gilette was kicked off of a Delta commuter flight when she was breastfeeding her infant, without a towel or blanket over her on the plane, and when a flight attendant offered her a blanket and she refused, she was led off of the plane.
Well, she is now suing (who can blame her - why should a woman’s bare breast offend people - come on it’s 2006!) the airline and the operator of the airline commuter flight basically for violating her rights and humiliating her.
Mothers came together at the airport the plane took off from in Vermont, and staged a protest, holding up signs saying “nurse-in” to get the point across that this mother should have been left alone to breast feed her child. It is a woman’s right, and I think people just have to get over seeing a partially exposed breast. It’s not anything we haven’t all seen before, right?
Breast Toning with Massage
I’ve been getting treatments lately on my body that are supposed to reduce the look of cellulite, as well as sculpt the body into shape, making it look like you lost weight but didn’t. It uses deep tissue massage techniques, and part of the body that they can also work on is the chest area, meaning the whole top part of your body is worked on, including your breasts.
It can actually help to lift and tone the breasts, and make them firmer by helping drain built up lymphatic fluid in the breasts as well as helping to tone the muscles that lie beneath the breast tissue, which helps to make them appear rounder and more “perky”.
It’s actually called Lypossage, and it can only be performed by a licensed massage therapist who is also certified and has been trained in the art of Lypossage, which uses specific movements that manipulate all the right areas and muscles to help tone them and make them “young” again.
You can help duplicate this at home too though, using your own hands to gently massage the breasts, and also by performing natural breast enhancement exercises that will help lift and tone this area.
Bizarre Breast News Story
This one is about twenty minutes away from where I live, and I can’t believe I just read this news story now (I must’ve been behind on the news). On November 2nd, this bizarre story involving a woman’s breast and a seemingly obsessive lover, was a big enough “news story” to make the big news site MSNBC.com.
A man named Ronald Meese, who is 29 years old, was turned over to authorities, presumably by his girlfriend (hopefully ex-girlfriend now), for carving a heart in the woman’s breasts signifying his love for her, and also carving an “X” on her arm, signifying the place that they would be together forever.
The victim, her name and age not given in the report, was treated at a local Canton, Ohio hospital and released with no life threatening injuries. It was not clear whether the man pinned her down, or how he was able to have her hold still long enough to do such a cruel thing, but it was also obvious that this was done against her will, since she reported him to authorities and had him arrested.
The man was arrested after the two were in a domestic dispute. Hopefully this girlfriend has the sense to stay away from this guy - he may try something else next time, since these types of guys are violent and they never change.
Help Fund Free Mammograms
I found a very worthwhile website that I think every woman may want to visit, to lend a simple supporting hand to the quest for free mammograms to those that need them but may not have the means to get the potentially life-saving screening for breast cancer.
It’s called TheBreastCancerSite, and if you just visit this page, and click on the link to fund free mammograms, it helps to contribute funds to a program that gives free life saving mammograms to women in inner cities, and low income or minority women who need them.
All you have to do is click on one of the sponsor’s links on the page, and view their ad, and they contribute some undisclosed portion of help to fund this important project. This project is extremely important if we are to win the war on breast cancer, as roughly one in eight women today (and it may just get worse) will be diagnosed with breast cancer within their lifetime.
Think about eight of your best girlfriends, and the statistics show that at least one of them will have breast cancer within their lifetime, whether it is sooner or later, this is pretty staggering, isn’t it?
The recommendation is that once a woman hits about 40 years of age, she receives a mammogram preferably once a year, and if that is not possible, then once every two years, to ensure the continuing health of her breasts and also to detect the onset of breast cancer as early as possible so treatment can be more effective when it is done in breast cancer’s earlier stages.
